The fresh new film’s blogger and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) has worked in the gambling enterprise and you will old a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic script, the latest cast’s suavely managed body gestures regarding like and you will risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably assertive photo (and additionally his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really outlined spectacle a low profile antique of category.” [ ten ]

While the area pursue a common development, the new characterizations is fresh in addition to activities good enough to overbalance. Its mostly a question of watching Mr. Powell experience their paces fashionably while you are a big shed away from actors and you can performers render your conventional support. Evelyn Keyes performs the good absolutely nothing woman who brings about the fresh new finest in him and you can Ellen Received ‘s the easy and you will slinky vixen whom becomes your to your jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb do a different sort of ready concert tour once the an exhausted police inspector who fundamentally closes the way it is. Many taking and you can puffing is done by all of the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
